In the early 18th century, Aurangabad came under the rule of the Asaf Jahi dynasty. With the ascent of Asaf Jahi rule, both Hyderabad and Aurangabad became significant centers for painting, blending Deccani and local styles into distinct regional traditions.
This notable artwork is a portrait of Hyderabad’s first Nizam, Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jah I in a three-quarters view, with his face shown in profile. Regally attired, he holds a rosary in his right hand, and grasps a sword with his left. The background is painted in a shade of blue.
