This 17th-century Golconda painting depicts a Begum seated regally on a golden throne.
Dignified, the Begum’s hand rests delicately on her folded knee as she leans slightly towards a drink offered by her maid who stands in front of her. The Begum’s attire consists of a red brocade dress and a white robe, along with her numerous pearl and gold necklaces, further emphasising her opulence. The artist has skillfully depicted her graceful posture, highlighting the luxurious lifestyle of the harem.
Champa trees, flying birds, and a painted sky in the background suggest a domestic setting, possibly a courtyard or garden.
