This striking portrait capturing Ibrahim Adil Shah I (r. 1557–1579), prominent ruler of the Bijapur Sultanate reflects a singular amalgamation of Persian, European and indigenous styles.
The Sultan stands gracefully against a soft background, adorned luxuriously. Exquisite details like his beard, turban, and delicate hand gestures highlight the artist’s skillful brushwork. Urdu-Persian script at the top adds a linguistic depth to the piece. There is some damage evident in the corners of the painting making preservation efforts imperative.
