This Ragamala painting represents Khambavati Ragini, an early-evening raga linked to Malkauns in Hindustani classical music. It reflects the serene mood of autumn after the monsoon.
The scene shows a king seated on a lotus-like throne, holding a white flower against a black background, representing the night sky. The second section depicts the interior of a blue-coloured mahal (palace). In this setting, a saint or rishi rests holding a lotus flower. Directly in front of him is a queen. Female attendants can be seen singing and holding a fly whisk. Below them, two attendants play musical instruments. The lamp is prominently displayed in this vibrant scene. Overall, these elements collectively represent the characteristics of Khambavati Ragini.
