As an archaeologist, each journey holds the promise of discovery. Many such moments have been experienced during my explorations as a part of the Preserve Heritage for Posterity (PHP) – our Flagship programme. I would like to share my unique experiences here that connect so beautifully to our heritage sustenance at the grassroot levels.
The intricate detailing of the seven divine mothers left us in awe. We educated the locals about its historical significance, and their reverence turned to action. They safeguarded the panel and began worshipping it as a sacred relic.
In Yanamadala village, Guntur district, another story unfolded. While visiting the Rama temple, a lengthy slab caught my eye at the entrance. On closer inspection, it turned out to be a 13th-century inscription with divine carvings of Ganesha and others, engraved on all four sides. Shockingly, the priests informed us it was repurposed as a foundation stone for the compound wall, dismissed as ‘useless’.
Despite sensitizing the temple authorities about its historical importance, the inscription slab remains buried in plain sight, awaiting the protection it deserves. Such moments remind us of the delicate balance between history and present-day needs and the urgency to preserve our heritage.
