The Changing Colors of a Menhir

During a Preserve Heritage for Posterity (PHP) survey at a megalithic Iron Age site in Padurivarigudem near Chandupatla in Nalgonda district, Telangana, our team learned of a peculiar phenomenon from a local youth, Saidulu. He spoke of a massive planted stone in Panduvarigudem that mysteriously changed color every evening after 4:00 PM.

Intrigued, we rushed to the site. As the clock struck 4, we witnessed the granite menhir slowly shift its hues, its dark patches glistening with a subtle transformation. The locals viewed it as a miracle, but we explained that the color change was due to the mineral composition of the stone reacting to light and temperature.

Today, the menhir stands as a unique geological wonder, drawing curious visitors every evening while remaining a reminder of the region’s megalithic legacy.
