1st century CE rock-cut Cave collapses at Mustabada
Findings
Noticed a collapsed rock-cut cave of 1st century CE at Musthabad village, Gannavaram Mandal, Krishna district, due to the overgrowth of vegetation.
The cave, was use by the Buddhist monks as rainy retreats during the Satavahana period.
A rare sculpture depicting Vishnu Trivikrama and his dwarapalas, Jaya and Vijaya, was carved on the walls in the typical Vengi Chalukyan style is noteworthy.
Call to Action
Expressed concern not only about the collapse of the historical rock-cut cave but also about the defacing of the cave structure by the local community. They widened the pathway, posing a serious threat to the 8th century Vaishnavite sculptures and the very existence of the cave.
Raised awareness among the villagers regarding the archaeological significance of the cave and the need to preserve it for posterity. The villagers assured that they would take care of the matter.
