India’s biggest Monolithic Ganesa Sculpture, Avancha, Mahboobnagar Telangana

Findings

A survey, a colossal monolithic sculpture of Lord Ganesha (18.0X15.0X8.0 feet), recognized as the largest in India, was noticed on the outskirts of Avancha Village in Mahbubnagar district, Telangana.

Call to Action

Organized a seminar on the Ganesa cult in Telugu land to publicise this at state level.

Medieval Temples 1247 CE in Dilapidated condition, Siddavatam, Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh

Findings

Medieval temple complex, located on the left bank of the River Penna at Jyothi Village, Kadapa, was noticed in a dilapidated condition.

Inferred from an inscription near the Gopuram that it could be dated to 1247 CE and that the Gopuram was built by Chinta Raminayakudu, a subordinate of Vaidumba King Rayadeva Maharaja Rakkasa Ganga, the ruler of Kadapa-Nellore region.

Call To Action

Sensitized the villagers on the historical significance of the temples, and also appealed to the officials of the Endowments and Archeology departments to safeguard the structures by restoring them to their past glory.

Buddhist cave 1st Cen. CE explored, Gunadala, Krishna, Andhra Pradesh

Findings

A rock-cut cave, of 1st century CE, was explored at Gunadala in Vijayawada.

Attributed the cave to the Satavahana period, noting its plain design without ornamental motifs. Interestingly, the cave underwent modifications during the 7th-8th centuries CE (Vengi Chalukya period), transitioning from Buddhist to Brahmanical use, with the addition of octagonal pillars and smooth walls.

Call To Actions

Appealed to the officials of the Department of Archaeology & Museums to declare it as a protected monument.

We wish to put on record that the cave is being reported for the first time by Pleach India Foundation and bears historical significance as far back as the Buddhist cave architecture in Deccan is concerned.

Findings

Visited the 12th century CE temple having walls carved with Ramayana panels but found sunken into the ground.

Temple ruins 16th Cen. CE located, Mallaram, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh

Findings

Explored the remains of a Trikuta temple.

The outer walls of the temple have collapsed, and the ceiling portion is dislocated, a stepped well is situated towards the northeast corner of the temple complex.

Call To Action

Requested the Dept. of Archaeology & Museums to declare it as a protected monument and restore it.

Threat for Iron Age Burials, Dharmavaram, Prakasam, Andhra Pradesh

Findings

Visited the iron age remains at Dharmavaram village in Addanki Mandal, Prakasam district.

The Iron Age burials, dating back to 1000 – 1500 BCE located on the hill slopes of the village outskirts, had been severely damaged during road construction activities.

Call To Action

Sensitized the villagers on the historical and archaeological significance of the burials and the need to preserve them for posterity. Appealed the State Department of Archaeology and Museums to protect the site under the provisions of the Act.

14th century CE Amitabha Buddha Statue, Nangigama, Krishna, Andhra Pradesh

Findings

A life-size stone sculpture (6’-0” tall, 4’-0” wide) of Amitabha Buddha, dating back to the 14th century CE, was noticied in Eturu Village, Chadarlapadu Mandal, Krishna District which suggests that Eturu was a Vajrayana Buddhist site.

Call To Action

Unnam Narasimha Rao, a resident of Eturu informed that the sculpture was recovered in two pieces recently while digging for foundations near the Library and they have erected it in the premises of the high school for safety and Security.

Appealed to the Department of Archaeology and Museums to protect the sculpture for posterity as it bears lot of archaeological and historical significance.

Neglected stepwell, Srikalahasthi, Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh

Findings

A survey in and around Kalahasthi revealed a brick-built circular step well, part of the Palace of Kalahasthi Zamindars, in Kasa Gardens, Srikalahasthi, Chittoor district.

The well is surrounded by numerous rooms and halls with provisions for dressing. The walls, pillars, and ceiling of the structure showcase a lustrous polish, indicative of its construction in the late 19th century in the Indo-European style.

A 16th Cen. CE pilgrim shelter lies in neglect, Tirupati Desantara Mandapam, Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh

Findings

A 16th century pilgrim shelter called Desantara Mandapam built for footpathers heading to Tirumala hills on the northern bund of Anaswamy Tank at Venkatapuram village was found in a state of utter neglect.

Call To Action

Appealed to the officials of the state departments of archaeology and museums and TTD to safeguard the 400 year old mandapam for posterity by engaging experienced archeological and heritage conservationists.

A rare Miniature Mosque, Eluru, Godavari, Andhra Pradesh

Findings

A rare miniature mosque was noticed at Sivayya School on the eastern street in Eluru Town, West Godavari district. The rare mosque, measuring 1.0 meter in length and 1.50 meters in height, is supported by a single pillar and features an arch representing the Qutb Shahi style of architecture.
